Turkana hat

Child hat

Circular needle: 40cm (16”) 5mm (US 8).

Gauge: 16sts = 10cm (4”).

Suggested yarn: Lamb’s Pride Worsted (Brown Sheep)

Finished size: circumference 45cm (18”).

Step 1: Cast on

  • Cast on 72 sts using the long-tail technique.
  • Join stitches for knitting in rounds, making sure not to twist.
  • Place marker to indicate the beginning of each round.

Step 2: Brim

  • Purl 5 rounds.

Step 3: Hat body

Repeat the six-round pattern below 5 times:

  • Rounds 1 & 2: Knit.
  • Round 3: Repeat (p1, k5).
  • Rounds 4 & 5: Knit.
  • Round 6: K3, repeat (p1, k5) to last 3 sts, p1, k2.

Step 4: Hat top

The hat should measure approximately 12cm (5”). Transfer your work to DPNs, or work with longer circular needles using the magic loop technique.

Work the following 15 rounds to close the top:

  • Round 1: Knit.
  • Round 2: 1st round of decreases: repeat (k1, ssk, k1, k2tog). You get 48 sts.
  • Round 3: Repeat (p1, k3).
  • Rounds 4 & 5: Knit.
  • Round 6: K2, repeat (p1, k3) to last 2 st, p1, k1.
  • Round 7: Knit.
  • Round 8: 2nd round of decreases: repeat (ssk, k2tog). You get 24 sts.
  • Round 9: Repeat (p1, k1).
  • Round 10 & 11: Knit
  • Rounds 12: 3rd round of decreases: repeat (ssk, k2tog). You get 12 sts.
  • Round 13: Knit.
  • Rounds 14: 4th round of decreases: repeat (ssk, k2tog). You get 6 sts.
  • Round 15: Knit.

Step 5: Finishing

  • Break the yarn leaving a 20cm (8”) tail.
  • Thread the tail through a tapestry needle, then transfer the remaining stitches from the knitting needles to the tapestry needle. Pull the tail to the inside of the hat, and pull it tight to close the top of the hat.
  • Weave in ends.
  • Block.
